Capitol Theatre
Blending heritage and innovation in a modern educational space
The Capitol Theatre, originally designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin in 1924, underwent a transformative process to become a dynamic educational facility. The challenge was to blend the building’s iconic heritage with contemporary learning environments that foster collaboration and innovation.
The goal was to repurpose the historic Capitol Theatre into a flexible, functional educational and office space, while retaining and honouring the building’s original architectural features. The design needed to support the diverse needs of students and faculty while providing spaces that encourage productivity and collaboration.
The multi-million-dollar refurbishment preserved the theatre’s stunning geometric ceiling and restored the grand entrance, while introducing modern learning spaces for over 1,000 students, alongside office and incubation areas. TCW supplied furniture solutions that seamlessly integrated with the heritage design, while supporting the dynamic, functional spaces within the building. The new furniture encouraged interaction, collaboration, and efficient workstyles, ensuring that both the spaces and the people who occupy them feel engaged and productive.
The Capitol Theatre now serves as a vibrant educational hub for RMIT University and a cultural venue, successfully blending the building’s historic charm with modern functionality. The transformation created spaces where students and faculty thrive, empowering them to collaborate, learn, and innovate, all within an environment that respects the building’s rich legacy.
