Merging heritage with modern functionality for dynamic learning spaces

TCW collaborated with FDC Building on the fit-out for the University of Sydney’s new Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) building. This six-storey, modern structure with a bronzed glass façade contrasts beautifully with the 122-year-old Heydon-Laurence building and the 101-year-old R.D. Watt building. The design balances heritage and innovation, creating a space where students and staff not only feel comfortable but also thrive in an inspiring academic environment.

Challenge

The challenge was to create flexible and dynamic workspaces across two buildings, accommodating classrooms, staff offices, breakout areas, and collaboration zones. At the same time, TCW needed to work within the unique constraints of the building’s design, including its distinctive façade and the placement of columns, which required creative sourcing and innovative furniture solutions to ensure functionality without compromising the aesthetic of the space.

Solution

TCW sourced and supplied a range of modern, ergonomic furniture that would serve both the functional and aesthetic needs of the space. We provided height-adjustable workstations with integrated cable management, above-desk power, and monitor arms, ensuring comfort and ease of use for all staff and students. The furniture solutions were tailored to support the evolving needs of the university’s faculty while maintaining the integrity of the building’s architecture. Desk configurations were carefully adjusted around columns to ensure both practicality and visual appeal.

Results

The result is a flexible, sustainable workspace that encourages both collaboration and individual focus, helping students and staff thrive in their academic pursuits. By sourcing high-quality furniture that complements the heritage features of the building while supporting modern learning and social spaces, the project delivers an environment where people feel comfortable, productive, and engaged. This partnership between TCW, FDC Building, and the University of Sydney has created a space that not only functions effectively but also fosters a sense of community and innovation.
