NSW Parliament House Education Centre
Overcoming design challenges to create a refined, functional space
The refurbishment of the auditorium at NSW Parliament House presented several design challenges, including structural engineering restrictions and the need to avoid air-conditioning grilles on the concrete floor. Close collaboration between TCW, Actiu, and NBRS Architecture was essential in overcoming these challenges, resulting in a high-quality, functional space.
The task was to navigate the design complexities of the auditorium, addressing both structural constraints and the requirement to avoid air-conditioning grilles while ensuring the space’s design and function thrived. The goal was to balance both aesthetic elegance and operational needs within the same space.
TCW provided 164 seats from Actiu’s Audit collection, strategically arranged across 11 rows to maximize the functional use of the space. A custom 3-seat beam was designed to work around the air-conditioning grille issue, maintaining aesthetic flow. To complement the design, seat light fittings were sourced from Dunnart by Light Project, and signage adhered to Actiu’s consistent standards. The addition of Instyle Vinyl provided a simple yet elegant feel to the space while ensuring compliance with Australian fire retardant standards.
The successful collaboration between TCW, Actiu, and NBRS Architecture resulted in a refined, functional auditorium that meets both design and operational goals. The NSW Parliament House Education Centre now offers a versatile, practical space that thrives in both form and function, supporting the quality standards required by the client and fostering a productive environment for educational events.
