Taronga Institute of Science & Learning
A hub for innovation, nature, and education Taronga Institute of Science & Learning
As part of Taronga Zoo’s Centenary Revitalisation Plan, the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning (TISL) was designed to push the boundaries of conservation, science, and learning. The design integrates nature-inspired elements to create a harmonious connection with its surroundings, focusing on the discovery of patterns in nature.
The challenge was to create a cutting-edge facility that encourages collaboration and innovation. The goal was to design spaces that supported both staff and visitors, fostering interdisciplinary exchanges between science, education, and animal care, while aligning with environmental and educational objectives.
TCW worked closely with the builder, architect, and Taronga Zoo to provide furniture that was both functional and visually integrated with the building’s natural aesthetics. We supplied Albury and Bronte chairs, ideal for breakout areas, meeting rooms, and flexible workspaces. Upholstered in earthy tones and set on wooden bases, these chairs complemented the facility’s design ethos, blending seamlessly with the surrounding sandstone landscape. The furniture played a key role in creating dynamic spaces that supported cross-disciplinary interactions.
The Taronga Institute of Science and Learning now stands as a beacon of innovation. It offers dynamic spaces that foster collaboration, discovery, and education, all while maintaining a strong connection to nature. The facility’s thoughtfully designed furniture helps support its mission to advance scientific and educational endeavors in an immersive, natural environment.
